Today is the 510th anniversary of what is believed to be the first known sighting of what is now the country of Brazil by a European. Vicente Yáñez Pinzón (c. 1462 – after 1514) continued to sail southwards along the coast to the equator, where he briefly explored the mouth of the Amazon. Portuguese explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral (c. 1468 – c. 1520), who claimed Brazil for his country in the same year, is considered by some to be the land's discoverer. Pinzón had been the captain of the Niña during Columbus' first voyage to the New World and his brother, Martín Alonso Pinzón (c. 1441 – c. 1493), was the captain of the Pinta.
