The Capture of the Last Incan Emperor

16 Nov 1532

On this date in 1532 the Spanish explorer and conquistador Francisco Pizarro González (c. 1471 or 1476 – 1541) captured Atahualpa (1497 - 1533), the last Sapa Inca of the Tahuantinsuyu, during a feast the Spaniards held in his honor to serve a a trap. The Spaniards had also taken advantage of a civil war to form alliances with those who opposed the emperor. Pizarro initially held Atahualpa as a prisoner so that he could serve the cause of the Conquistadores. But once the emperor was no longer needed, Pizarro reneged on his promises to spare him, although he had paid a fortune as a ransom and agreed to convert to Christianity in return for his life. The emperor was executed on August 29th of 1533. The massacre of the Incas and capture of Atahualpa during the feast at Cajamarca spelled the end of the Incan empire.
